I found myself walking into the kitchen to get a couple of gummy bears from a package in the cupboard. One of my indulgences is buying a package of gummy bears from time to time.

As I approached the package, I said to myself that they have a lot of sugar, so I’ll only get two—that can’t do much harm. Walking back into the other room with my treasure, which I thought was only a pair of gummies, I then realized there were actually three gummies in my hand. I thought, it’s only one extra. Glued to that third, a fourth gummy was hiding. My last thought about this momentous issue that had temporarily captured my cognitive mind was, “Okay, so there are four. It’s not worth going back to the kitchen and trying to squeeze them back into the bag.”

So what is the point of sharing this insignificant story? My thoughts moved from gummies to the dreadful politics of today—thinking about this insane, dreamlike reality, with these seemingly dreamlike evil people ruling the USA. They cling to power and money like a climber clinging to the edge of a cliff. They can never get enough gummies.

To give them the benefit of the doubt, you might say that the corruption of giving yourself justification for actions that have no justification begins small and quickly grows into a monster, like a snowball rolling down a hill of damp snow. Before you know it, you have completely changed the reality you see—and the reality you then have to project onto others to maintain your sense of “I.” Otherwise, you feel your very existence is hanging on the edge of that cliff.
